Driving to Lake Tahoe New Year's

Getting ready for the trip was a hassle in its own right. Gathering the snacks in Walmart, looking for snow chains, booking, packing... it all took its toll on our nerves.

Finally the day came! We picked up the rental car in Santa Clara and after a stop at home for lunch and dirtying our hands (and new gloves) practicing putting on the chains, we were on our way. The drive is 4 hours long on a good day so we split the driving. Leia: San Jose to Sacramento, Guy: Sacramento to Heavenly village. We did take bathroom and snack stops too. The road was rough, the first part of the drive consisted of trying to bypass highway traffic, second half was just dark, narrow, and frozen.

After driving in the dust cloud of a truck, Guy tried to wash the windshield with the wipers and had the wiper fluid freeze on the front window, which made the drive a lot more interesting.

We arrived in Blue Jay lodge, which is a pretty OK motel or guesthouse, by Chinese standards. It's not great. The receptionist was nice and friendly. We got to our room and ate some dehydrated noodles that we brought with us and reserved ski passes and ski gear. Happy new year!
